Misturas, winner of the “1st Contest of Innovative Materials of Galicia” organized by the Galician Innovation Agency-GAIN

Misturas has won the “I Contest of Innovative Materials of Galicia”, organized by the Galician Innovation Agency-GAIN, through the Materioteca de Galicia. The cold bituminous mixture with nanocellulose additives developed by Misturas, with the contribution of CETIM Technological Center and the Roads, Geotechnics and Materials Group of the University of A Coruña (UDC) won this contest, in the category Company-Research. It is an alternative bio pavement to conventional asphalt, formulated as gravel-emulsion type cold mix that incorporates nanocellulose in its composition. This provides it with a high degree of sustainability and added value and also helps enhancing the forestry sector, which is essential for Galicia. This material is the result of the R&D&I project “EMULCELL”, co-financed by the Center for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI)-Ministry of Science and Innovation, between 2017 and 2020 (Ref. IDI-20171097).

Sustainability and orientation towards circular economy were the common elements in the four winning materials, selected from among the 80 applications submitted, organized in the categories of crafts, companies, knowledge centers and mixed research-company consortiums.

The closing ceremony of the contest took place at the CIS Technology and Design facilities in Ferrol on November 3, coinciding with the celebration of the World Materials Day. The event was presided over by Patricia Argerey, director of GAIN, who presented the winners with a commemorative bell-shaped glass, specially designed for the occasion and made of polymers printed with 3D technology.

During the event, a publication with interviews with the creators of the selected materials and finalists was presented to contribute to the public dissemination of the efforts made by Galician professionals, companies and knowledge centers in the field of R&D&I in innovative materials.
