Technical and environmental improvement of cold bituminous mixtures through an R&D&I project shared with Ence
A project led by Ence Energía y Celulosa, S.A., Misturas will seek to improve the technical and environmental performance of cold and warm bituminous mixtures. It will do so through the use of lignin obtained in the cellulose pulp production process, which will be modified chemically or with oily additives, also incorporating material from road milling to replace natural aggregates.
The initiative is supported by Cetim (Multisectorial Research Technological Center) and the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Integrated Group of Civil Engineering and Geomatics of the Lugo Campus), and will be developed over a period of three years.
The project, called Bitúmina, has just passed the validation of the DNSH principle, which implies official recognition that it will not cause damage to the environment. This certification is a mandatory requirement for R&D&I projects co-financed by the CDTI (Spanish Center for Technological Development and Innovation) with Next Generation EU funds. It guarantees compliance with six environmental objectives: climate change mitigation, adaptation thereto, sustainable use and protection of water resources, transition to a circular economy, pollution prevention and control, and protection and recovery of biodiversity and ecosystems.
